i have 2 pc and the ONLY time you need 2 matched pair is running in dual channel mode. and i have 4 slots with 512 in all 4 not just 2.
the other has 512+256 and is confirmed as 3/4 gig of functioning memory and the MB manual supports it as well.
regular mode you can mix and match as you want.
